Improving the School Experience for Children in Goa

A better learning environment can make a real difference to a child’s education. As part of our ongoing CSR activities in India, ELSTEEL has teamed up with local furniture manufacturer Unwood to improve classroom facilities at Shree Hanuman Vidyalaya School in Goa, while giving plastic waste a new purpose.

Innovative approach to plastic waste

Indian furniture manufacturer Unwood transforms recycled plastic and earth minerals into durable, wood-like materials using its Macro Molecular Fibre Matrix (MMFM) technology.
By diverting plastic waste from landfills and giving it a new purpose, Unwood creates strong, long-lasting materials suitable for everyday use, offering a practical alternative to traditional materials for school furniture.

The Project

Shree Hanuman Vidyalaya School provides education to nearly 500 children from the local community, but has limited classroom facilities and resources.
To help create a more comfortable and practical learning environment, ELSTEEL has provided:

– 100 desk-and-bench sets
– 500 chairs
– Blackboards and educational supplies
– Sports equipment

These additions will help improve everyday learning conditions, giving children better facilities in which to learn, play and develop.

Power the Planet

The project supports more than education. By choosing furniture made from recycled materials, we’re also helping reduce plastic waste and the demand for timber.
According to Unwood:

– Each school bench repurposes approximately 25 kg of plastic waste.
– Every 14 benches produced help save one tree.
– Recycling 1,000 kg of plastic waste can prevent approximately 1.5 tonnes of CO₂ emissions.

It’s a practical example of what Power the Planet means to ELSTEEL: making positive changes for people and the environment.
