Mangroves are among the world’s most important coastal ecosystems. They provide a vital habitat for wildlife, help protect shorelines from erosion and storm damage, and play an important role in capturing carbon. Unfortunately, they are also vulnerable to pollution, with waste carried by rivers and waterways often becoming trapped within their complex root systems.

To support local conservation efforts, Elsteel recently organised a clean-up initiative in Sri Lanka's Negombo Lagoon, in conjunction with World Environment Day.

Working alongside the Department of Coast Conservation and Coastal Resource Management, the Sri Lanka Air Force, local authorities and volunteers, the project focused on removing waste that had accumulated throughout the mangrove ecosystem. Teams travelled by boat to affected areas, collecting plastic, polystyrene, glass, cans and other discarded rubbish before bringing it back to shore for disposal.

As part of the initiative, Elsteel arranged the boats, gloves, collection bags, refreshments and other essential supplies needed for the day, while also donating rakes that can continue to be used for future environmental projects. Members of our Sri Lanka team were pleased to join the clean-up alongside the many volunteers who gave their time and energy to the effort.

We were also pleased to welcome the Mayor of Negombo, who came to support the initiative and recognise the collective effort to protect this important local environment. Looking ahead, Elsteel hopes to continue working with local stakeholders on projects that contribute to environmental conservation and support the communities where we operate.

One of the key messages shared during the event was that much of the waste found in the lagoon does not originate locally. It is often carried downstream from inland areas before becoming trapped in the mangroves, highlighting the importance of environmental awareness far beyond the coastline itself.

Projects like this demonstrate the value of collaboration between businesses, public organisations and local communities. By working together, meaningful progress can be made in protecting these important natural environments.

A big thank you to everyone involved for making the day such a success.
